That Special Wine
Wine is a very personal thing indeed so I decided to ask around our office to see what they would choose to have with family and friends this Holiday Season.
Lee Watson - Sales Manager
- 1996 Dom Perignon
- 2004 Valduero Reserva Magnum (Spain)
"I would like to have the Van Zellers Rufo Douro Tinto 08
Sweet nose, lovely plum fruit, slightly herbal. Versatile for matching both Chinese & Western dishes. Might go well with your Christmas Pudding too!"
Pierre Tam - Manager China
- Syunka Irdori Junmai Daiginiyo Sake
- 2005 Domaine Jacques Prieur Echezeaux Grand Cru
" I would like to select ' Hatsugokoro Junmai Daiginjyo ' which is full bodied with a little acidic sharpness in the flavor & a slight flower fragrance.
As this sake is on a premium level & packed in gift box, it is also good as a Christmas present as well."And for me? I would have to start the day sharing a bottle of 1997 Louis Roederer Cristal with my wife, then a bottle of 1990 Valduero Gran Reserva 12 year with lunch and finish the day sipping some 2006 Quinta Vale D. Maria LBV Port with my grand father.
On behalf of all of us at Saveurs I would like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.
Cheers!

With the HKTDC International Wine & Spirits Fair being held in November comes an opportunity to have some of the wine industry's talented wine makers and owners come to Hong Kong. We are pleased to introduce them to you.
Unfortunately Edouard has found out that he needs to have a minor operation at this time so he can not attend. However we will still have his wines available for tasting during the event.
We will be having many dinners and tastings outside of the fair that will give you a chance to get to know and experience the passion that these wine makers have for making great wines.
Stay tuned for more details.
If you would really like to attend a particular event send us an email to marketing@saveurs.com.hk and we will let you know as soon as the events are confirmed.

Featured Outlet - Graze, Sheung Wan
At first glance the menu appears similar to any other cafe but when you have a look at the food on display you know it isn't. Opening at 8am on weekdays and 9am on weekends you can start your day with a healthy breakfast menu and a cup of coffee made from Graze's very own whole bean grind or one of their gourmet teas if you would prefer.
After breakfast there really is quite a large selection to keep you "Grazing" throughout the day. Salads, Sandwiches, Pastas, Quiches, Burritos (they look really good), Muffins, Cookies and don't get me started on the desserts. Everything is available to have in the small but comfortable dinning area or you can take away (Including the wine).
When I visited I was behaving and just had the baby spinach, toasted walnut & blue cheese salad that was really good and surprisingly filling. My good behavior didn't extend to the beverages and I did indulge in a couple of glasses of Summerhouse Chardonnay while I relaxed after a busy Monday.
The thing that you notice about Graze is that, despite the happy staff and fun atmosphere of this cozy place, they do take what they do very seriously. The standard of all the ingredients is extremely high, as is the service, but despite this they have offered everything at very reasonable prices.
If you are on foursquare then you'll be wrapped with the special offers you can get just for checking in. Click HERE for the details.

SPECIAL RELEASE
DOM PERIGNON 1996
We have been offered a 40 case parcel (OWCx12) of the excellent 1996 Dom Perignon (in green gift box)
This item is very rare in Hong Kong and you will have to act quick if you would like to purchase.
But that's not all! We have also secured this at a price well below the market rate.
1996 Dom Perignon $1,880 per bottle.
Original Sealed Gift Box
Available for immediate shipment
No Minimum Quantity.
Tasting Notes:
The 1996 Dom Perignon is superb. Layers of roasted nuts, spices, tar, smoke, acacia blossoms and a light touch of honey emerge from the glass, adding complexity to the fruit. This large-scaled Dom Perignon is currently in a beautiful place where early tertiary notes have begun to appear, yet the wine retains plenty of freshness. This is a terrific Dom Perignon that can be enjoyed today but that also promises much pleasure for the future. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2029
Wine Advocate 95pts
This features floral, candied citrus, pencil shaving and hazelnut aromas and flavors. It's fresh and focused, with a firm structure offset by a mouth filling richness and a lacy texture.
Wine Spectator 93pts

2011 Australian Wine Companion - out now
I don't know why but I'm one of those people that enjoys having books sitting in my book case. Not that I read a lot but it is something that would give any visitor a reasonable glimpse into my personality.
Among my collection is 6 editions of James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion which will probably tell you straight away that I am an Aussie (No Prize for Guessing). So I was delighted to hear that the latest book of Aussie wine wisdom is out now being the 2011 edition.
The big change this year is the addition of an iphone application, which at $9.99 (AU I think) will be a big hit with New World wine buffs. Brilliant! Now anyone, and everyone, will be an annoying wine expert.
Next time you go out for dinner watch the guy who gets the wine list, excuses himself to go to the bathroom and then comes back an expert on the Australian wines on the list. Chances are he has the new Australian wine companion app!
Personally I will stick to the book because I enjoy sharing the joy of discovery with friends as we try the wine and then flip through the pages together to look up how close we were to the official ratings.
You can get your BOOK copy of the companion HERE and the iphone app HERE.

Summerhouse wines 2010 vintage news.
The team at Summerhouse wines in New Zealand have been working hard lately in some pretty cold conditions as well. Here is the latest information they had on the 2010 harvest and other happenings around the vineyard.
2010 Harvest News
This years harvest was a fairly relaxed time. We were blessed with fantastic weather so all the fruit was picked and in the winery before the late autumn rain set in. The fermentations have now come to an end and the labour intensive process of lees-stirring has started.
This is Heather and Meric's 12th harvest at Summerhouse. "So to the end of another harvest at Summerhouse" comments Meric. "The cool, slow start to the year was followed by perfect summer and autumn weather conditions that enabled us to pick individual parcels of fruit when they were ready. The fruit was clean, bunch sets were perfect and the yields were spot on. So far 2010 is looking like a fantastic vintage for Marlborough and Summerhouse."
Now we are about a quarter of the way through the long but important process of pruning the vines. We carefully prune the Summerhouse vines to ensure quality and even ripening in next years fruit.
Wine Making News
We have some new additions to the barrel hall this year - French oak Pungeon barrels. These are the largest barrels we use and hold 500 litres. They will add warm sweet oak flavours to the chardonnay.
We will have a more detailed report on the vintage as soon as they get the chance to jot down a few words.

TOP 10 Summer White Wines
It's summer and by now you've been diving for the wine fridge only to discover you haven't restocked the white wine from last year. Fear not! The team has put their heads together to come up with our TOP 10 White wines for you. If you're still not sure what to get, then get a mixed case and try them all.
1. 2000 Domaine Jacques Prieur Montrachet Grand Cru, Burgundy, FR
This was a unanimous choice for our favourite Burgundy. Although it's now in it's 10th year it is still as fresh and vibrant as it was when bottled. In fact we recommend that you decant it for an hour or so before serving. Not really one for around the pool but if you are celebrating then it's a great choice.
2. 2007 Antonin Rodet Puligny Montrachet, Burgundy, FR
Price: $475
OK, so if Grand Cru is not for you then how about this winner. This wine is rich and buttery with a warm and generous finish. Aged in oak for 14 months you will find it good with hot appetizers, seafood and well chosen friends.
3. 2009 Summerhouse Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, NZ
Price: $145
This is no ordinary Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. The quality of this wine comes from the care taken with the grapes and it's evident in every drop. Hand picked and bunch pressed it is a fine example of terroir and it is suitable for drinking by itself or with pasta and seafood. This is one to purchase by the case as you will find it disappears very quickly from the fridge.
4. 2007 Domaine Marcel Deiss Riesling, Alsace, FR
Price: $230 Wine Advocate 88
More citrus, less sweetness and good minerals in this Bio-Dynamic Wine. Refreshing enough to drink by itself but Riesling has always been a wonderful food wine. Relatively low in alcohol (12%) it can be enjoyed throughout the whole meal.
5. 2008 ItaliaPinot Grigio, IGT, Veneto, IT
Price: $85Many wines in this price range are very drinkable but not many truly reflect their style. This wine is an exception and from the moment you put it to your lips you know you are drinking an Italian Pinot Grigio from the sun drenched hills of Veneto. You really won't need an excuse to open a bottle but if you are having a celebration this summer this wine won't break the bank.
6. 2008 Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe La Crau, Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, Southern Rhone, FR
Price: $440 Wine Advocate 91
This is one of the finest white wines of the appellation. Rich, full, super fresh and long bodied. This wine is maturing now and is great drinking.
7. 2009 Valduero Garcia Viadero Blanco, Ribera del Duero, SP
Price: $105 Wine Advocate 87
A unique wine made from 100% Albillo, the only one of it's kind. Exciting citrus notes give way to a palate that is crisp, dry and fresh but most importantly it is balanced, leaving a clean finish. It's low in Alcohol (12%) so you can enjoy more than one glass. If you find Sauvignon Blancs a bit over powering then you will love this one.
8. 2007 Domaine Marcel Deiss Langenberg, Saint-Hippolyte, Alsace, FR
Price: $340 Wine Advocate 91
When you want to provide a white wine that is a great expression of terroir look no further. Hand picked and blended this is a wine that is full, luscious and modestly sweet. A great choice for something above the rest.

9. 2009 MOJO Sauvignon Blanc, Adelaide Hills, AU

Light and refreshing there isn't a summers day that you couldn't enjoy this wine. Tropical fruits, good acidity and a long finish makes this a versatile wine that can be enjoyed with cheese platters or fruit but maybe best enjoyed with Oysters and Scallops.
10. 2002 Domaine Marcel Deiss Gewurztraminer Vendange Tardive, Alsace, FR
Price: $560 750ml
No list of fine white wines would be complete without a Desert Wine to finish off. This one is not too sweet with great acidity and evidence of aging starting to appear. Any cheese platter or desert with fruit would be a great companion. On a hot day it will make a superb welcome drink for your guests.
Of course we have many other fine white wine samples and these are just a few of them. If you can't see what you're looking for give us a call and ask. we are only to happy to help.
